Let's Talk About Social Health

Starting a new chapter in life can be scary. You're in a new place with new people and you just don't quite know yet where you fit in.

Approximately 30% of college students drop out after their first year of college. Surviving freshman year can be tough if you do not form healthy social relationships. Additionally, having access to a proper support group of professors, friends, collegues and mentors can benefit your academic performance and your overall well-being.

Let's explore some ways to prioritize your social health...

  1. Get involved. Join a group on campus: greek life, intramural sports, clubs... the list goes on. Find something you are interesting in and get involved.

  2. Fight the urge to go home. Instead of returning home to quench your homesickness, try looking at old pictures and keepsakes from your time at home. Facetime old friends and call your family. Removing yourself from campus life won't help you find where you fit in.

  3. Hallmates. Check in on your hallmates. Ask if they would like to go to dinner. A lot of meaningful conversations are had over food.

  4. Don't be afraid to say yes. It can be easy to hide in our rooms when we are invited to social events by friends. Embrace your time in college and enjoy your freedom. Get out and meet people- you never know who you could meet.
