Let's define two terms...
Health- (n.) "A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." - The World Health Organization
Health Literacy- (n.) " the evolving skills and competencies needed to find, comprehend, evaluate, and use health information and concepts to make educated choices, reduce health risks, and improve quality of life."- Journal of Health Communication
Knowledge and action are two different things. Having the knowledge of how to live a healthy lifestyle is one thing. But...having this knowledge and putting this knowledge to practice is vital to improving our health literacy.
According to the World Health Organization, access to good health practices is a fundamental right that every human being should have access to without discrimination. As humans, we have a right to understand how to keep our bodies healthy. Health is deeper than just physical necessities. Health of the mind, the body and the soul are all important.
Prioritizing health over convenience can be very hard to do- especially for college students. A study conducted on 471 college students at California State University reported that “when asked to rate the ‘healthiness’ of their eating habits, 51% of participants stated ‘poor’ or ‘fair’" with “lack of time” and “lack of money” being the top two reasonings. Students do not think they have the time to do the research or the money to buy healthy groceries, so they do not try. But living a healthy lifestyle doesn't have to be so hard...
This blog will provide tips and explanations of the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. The hope is to make this information more easily accessible, but to also increase the health literacy of the reader. Hopefully, this blog will be a catalyst for a change in your lifestyle or, at the very least, be a resource for you to better understand the benefits what a healthy lifestyle can do for you.
